Delayed Gratification and Eternal Rewards (Coach Carter or Gladiator)

June 26th, 2012

Movie Bible Study

Show clip from either Coach Carter (last scene) or Gladiator (deleted scene with Christians).

Discussion:

Name some movies where the good guys wins.

Name some movies where the bad guy wins.

What happens in real life?

What happens in the Bible? (Joseph, John the Baptist, Jesus, early Christians)

Hebrews 11:13, 11:32-37

Sometimes God saves us from the mouths of lions (Daniel).  Sometimes we get eaten by the lions (early Christians)

Living in the World (Veggie Tales: Rack, Shack, and Benny)

June 21st, 2012

Movie Bible Study

Read or summarize Daniel 1.

Read v. 4-5, 8-12.

Were Daniel and the others vegetarians?  (no)

Why didn’t they eat the king’s food?

God blessed their self-denial.

What did he give them?

Who are  you in this story?

Where is Babylon? (here)

What’s the king’s table?

What’s on it?

There are three ways to deal with it:  pig out, sample, abstain

What’s pigging out?  What’s sampling?

What does it mean to be defiled?

Romans 12:2

Hebrews 11:13

I John 2:15-17

How are Christians similar to the world?

How are we different?

What are you doing to fit in that’s bad?

What are you doing to identify with the world that’s good?

Look around you this week.  What are the Babylonians like?  Observe them and see how they are different from God’s people.

In the World, Not of the World (The Village)

June 21st, 2012

Movie Bible Study

This Bible study is a spoiler for The Village.

Give summary of movie, show a few scenes, then go to the end where they pull out the photograph that shows it’s contemporary.  The whole movie, the audience assumes the setting is the 1700-1800’s, then we find out it’s in the 2000’s.

Why did these people leave “the towns”?  (crime, they wanted innocence)

What would you choose?

What does God want?

In the world, not of the world.

Matthew 5:  God wants us to be salt and light, not hide.

Talk about the difficulty of this, but the necessity.

(Next week’s Bible study is an example of people who did this.)

Our Magnificent Obsession (The Notebook)

June 21st, 2012

Movie Bible Studies

Ephesians 5:25-33  What does God want for us in marriage?  (fidelity, vows — sickness and health, etc., for life)

Matthew 19

What does God say about singleness?  I Cor. 8

Show scene 2 from The Notebook.  Discuss his devotion, his all-consuming passion, his having done one thing well.

Ephesians 5:32  What does marriage mirror?  Us and God

Draw parallels for me.

Our great love, higher than marriage, everything else falls under this love.

He is our one pure an holy passion, our magnificent obsession.

We will do as Noah did; we will devote ourselves to serving Him.

God’s Blessings and Curses (Pirates of the Caribbean)

June 13th, 2012

Movie Bible Studies

Show clip from Pirates of the Caribbean, “Aztec Gold”.  They have done evil, so they are cursed.  They will eat, but not be satisfied, drink, but still be thirsty, etc.  They were compelled by it; now they are consumed by it.

Micah 6:9-16

v. 10  wicked house, ill-gotten treasures

v.11  dishonest scales

v.12  rich violent men, liars

v. 16 idolators

So . . . . v. 13-15.  Sound like the Pirates?

In contrast,

Deuteronomy 8:1-2, 6-10  What God wants from us.

The conditions?  v. 11-18

Bad Guys (Mystery Men)

June 13th, 2012

Movie Bible Study

Give synopsis of movie up to scene 11.  Explain about the “superheroes” and the bad guys, and Captain Amazing’s self-promoting role in the whole conflict.

Show clip from Mystery Men, scene 11.  Show clip without comment.  Stop when woman checks his pulse and he’s obviously dead.  Hand out pencils and paper and show clip again.  Tell students to write down all of Captain Amazing’s bad character traits.  When clip ends, ask each kid to name one negative trait that Amazing exhibits.  Have everyone go to Proverbs.  All verses are found in Proverbs.

16:5, 16:18  Arrogance

14:16-17, 16:32, 19:19, 22:24-25  Impatience, Anger, Temper

29:20  Rashness

25:28, 29:11  Self-control

Discuss that we may actually die from our arrogance or rashness, but we will have to face negative consequences.  Life is hard when you have this sinful characteristics; that’s why God wants us to avoid them.

What’s the opposite of these traits?  Humility, patience, self-control.

Seeing the Unseen (The Matrix)

June 7th, 2012

Movie Bible Study

What is faith?

Hebrews 11:1

Romans 4:17

Romans 8:5 (what our minds are set on)

II Corinthians 5:7

II Corinthians 4:16-18 (the unseen)

Show clip from The Matrix, scene 8, Morpheus’s speech about the matrix, that “we’re slaves.”

Then scene 36, where Neo finally “sees” the matrix and knows reality.

We have to learn to fix our eyes on the unseen, to walk by faith, not by sight.  We have to see the actual reality of the spiritual world, and not the “matrix” that Satan imposes on our world.

Respecting People, Part II (Babe)

June 7th, 2012

Read Matthew 20:25-28

Who are the “Gentiles”? (the outsiders, the worldly, the ones who weren’t following God)

How does Jesus say they lead or rule?

Show clip from Babe, scene  .  This is where Ma (the dog) tells Babe to intimidate the sheep into obeying.  Babe tries this, and it doesn’t work.  So he tries a different tactic.

Discussion:

What was Ma telling Babe?

What happened?

How did it reflect this scripture?

How did Babe elicit the sheep’s cooperation?  (kindness and respect)

I Peter 3:8-9

Don’t repay insults with insults.  Don’t treat people with disrespect.  Be humble.  Seek harmony.

People need leaders.  Jesus wasn’t a follower, but He didn’t intimidate or manipulate or belittle to get followers.  We follow a different path from the world.

Respecting People (Napoleon Dynamite)

June 7th, 2012

Movie Bible Study

Clip is from Napoleon Dynamite, deleted scenes.  Choose the kickball scene and play.

Read Matthew 5:22.  Ask “What does this raca mean?”  Explain it is a term of disrespect or contempt.  Say, “I’m going to give you permission to say some things now that yo wouldn’t ordinarily say, but let’s avoid cussing.  Tell me some words or signs of disrespect that people show toward one another.”

“What does God says about this.”

“What if they deserve it?”

“How does God see those people?  What is His relation to them?”  See if the group can realize that God created those people, too.  When you insult someone, you insult the one who created him.  It’s like insulting a kid in front of his parents.  How do the parents take it?  It makes them very upset, of course.  We have to realize that God feels the same way when we show disrespect for one of His creations or one of His children.

What if someone is doing the same to you?  How do you react?  Matthew 5:11-12
